UCSF 163 Spinal Cord

What dye(s) were used to stain this tissue section? [ + ]

Cresyl violet - basic dye that binds nucleic acids, but preferentially stains RNA

What are the aggregates in the cytoplasm of ? [ + ]

Nissl (or chromophil) substance

Why is this material so basophilic? [ + ]

RNA in the form of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and aggregates of free ribosomes

What parts of neurons contain this material? [ + ]

Cell body and dendrites (left processes) - absent from the axon hillock and axon (right process)

What does its presence in motor neurons imply? [ + ]

They synthesize large amounts of proteins and peptides

What structure in the nucleus is intensely stained? [ + ]

Nucleolus

Why are the nerve bodies of motor neurons so large? [ + ]

Many substances needed in the axon and dendrites are only synthesized in the cell body and require transport to these sites

What is the function of the axon hillock? [ + ]

Structure capable of the generation of an action potential that conducts impulses away from the cell body
