Blood Cells

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a red blood cell and a white blood cell within a blood clot.

  • (red)
    • Biconcave discs (i.e., both sides of the disc curve inwards).
    • ~7.8 µm diameter.
    • Their shape maximizes the surface area for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
    • Flexible to allow passage through small capillaries.
  • - its small size suggests it is a small lymphocyte
    • Microvilli/Pseudopods - finger-like extensions on the cell surface
  • Fibrin strands (tan)
