EM 235 Kidney Glomerulus

Kidney Glomerulus

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fenestrated capillary in the glomerulus of a renal corpuscle in the kidney. The front half of this capillary has been removed revealing the inner surface of the remaining endothelial cells.

  • (red) - inner (lumenal) surface of the endothelial cells
    • (~50 to 100 nm in diameter) - endothelial cells contain numerous pores (or fenestrations)
      • Unlike other fenestrated capillaries, these pores are not spanned by a diaphragm in the kidney
    • Fenestrations allow access of blood to the underlying basement membrane
  • (tan) - damaged remnants covering other capillaries
