Blood Supply

The three dimensional structure of blood vessels in tissues can be investigated by producing a vascular cast. The blood vessels are perfused with resin, allowed to harden, and the surrounding tissue is then dissolved. The vascular cast is then examined by scanning electron microscopy.

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a portion of the vascular cast of a thyroid. Each follicle is surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. This rich vascularization allows follicular cells to be in direct contact with capillaries.
