EM 329 Blood Clot

Blood Clot

Scanning electron micrograph (TEM) of a blood clot on the luminal surface of an indwelling vascular catheter.

The action of thrombin on the soluble fibrinogen in plasma induces the formation of long strands of fibrin (tan). They entangle red blood cells (red) and platelets forming a spongy mass that gradually hardens and contracts to form the blood clot.

The formation of blood clots with catheters is a relatively common problem.
