EM 346 Megakaryoblast

Megakaryoblast

Megakaryoblasts are the earliest morphological identifiable platelet precursor. They undergo endomitosis (nuclear division without cytoplasmic division) several times to become promegakaryocytes. Endomitosis continues, cells become larger, the nuclear lobulation and volume increase, becoming mature megakaryocytes.

  • Megakaryoblast (green)
    • Grow in size by endomitosis
    • Nucleus (blue)
      • Nucleus is round or oval.
      • Three to five times the size of the cytoplasm
      • Several nucleoli (yellow)
    • Granules (black) - scattered small electron-dense granules
    • Cytoplasm (green) - often has prominent cytoplasmic blebs
  • Erythroblasts (tan) - most of the other cells are polychromatic and orthochromatic erythroblasts

Subcellular Structures

  • Nuclei (blue) / Nucleolus (yellow) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • Mitochondria (red)
