Resting - quiescent chondrocytes

Proliferative - rapidly dividing chondrocytes that organize into longitudinal columns of stacked cells

Calcification - calcification of the cartilage matrix causes apoptosis of the chondrocytes leaving longitudinal spicules of calcified cartilage
