MHS 208 Tongue

Tongue

The tongue is covered by a specialized mucosa that contains multiple types of papillae and taste buds. This specimen is from a region in which filiform papillae are the predominant surface specialization.

  • - parallel lines of lightly keratinized, pointed projections that cover most of the anterior surface of the tongue.
    • These papillae are mechanical and provide friction for holding of food during mastication.
    • Do not contain taste buds.
  • - arranged in three bundles at right angles to each other to allow flexibility and precision in movements of the tongue.
  • Minor Salivary Glands - found throughout the tongue.
    • - secrete a fluid that contains digestive enzymes.
    • - secrete a fluid that contains mucus (glycoproteins known as mucins).
