MHS 295 Ileum

Ileum

Tissue from the ileum fixed after perfusion of a dye (red colloid) through the peripheral vascular system. Both the arterial supply and venous drainage of the mucosa are filled with the dye.

  • (or mucous membrane)
    • - network of capillaries found in the lamina propria with capillary loops near the tips
      • This reflects the metabolic activities of enterocyte absorption/secretion and for immune defense.
    • - surrounded by a polygonal meshwork of blood vessels
  • - larger arterial and venous vessels that supply and drain the mucosa
  • - long, linear capillaries are seen in the inner circular layer

Blood travels upward from arterioles in the submucosa through capillaries around crypts, further upwards through the capillaries in core the villi, and then drain downward through venules to larger vessels in the submucosa.
