UCSF 234 Fundic Stomach

Fundic Stomach

This specimen was stained with a combination of iron hematoxylin (basic dye) & aniline blue (acidic dye; IHAB). Acidophilic structures (e.g., collagen) stain bright blue while basophilic structures stain black to brown (e.g., heterochromatin).

Examine the of the fundic stomach.

  • - surface invaginations lined with mucous cells
    • - simple columnar cells with secretion granules stained bluish-gray
  • - contain three major types of cells:
    • - smaller, basophilic cells found in the isthmus and neck between the lightly-stained parietal cells. Their secretion granules are stained dark-gray/black.
    • - large, oval cells with a central nucleus found mostly in the neck, but are found throughout the gland. They are stained light-gray and do not contain secretion granules.
    • - smaller, basophilic cells found mostly in the fundus/body of the gland. Their secretion granules are stained dark-gray/black.
