Tooth Development

This fetal pig snout shows at the bell stage.

  • - overlies the tooth facing the oral cavity.
  • - arises by the condensation of mesenchymal cells on the central axis of the developing tooth.
    • - loose connective tissue within the papilla.
  • Enamel Organ - epithelium formation that responsible for the production of enamel.
    • - stellate cells that occupy the inner region of the enamel organ. It is mostly composed of fluid filled extracellular space.
    • - forms the outer cell boundary.
    • - forms the inner cell boundary.
    • - several layers of squamous cells on the surface of inner enamel epithelium.
  • - simple columnar cells that produce predentin. Their basophilic cytoplasm faces the layer of dentin.
    • - light staining, unmineralized matrix between odontoblasts and the layer of dentin.
    • - basophilic, mineralized matrix between odontoblasts and ameloblasts.
  • - simple columnar cells that produce enamel.
